Our Work

The Central MetroWest Substance Awareness & Prevention Collaborative (CMSAPC) is committed to addressing youth substance misuse with a multi-faceted approach. Through education, outreach, partnerships, and evidence-based programs, we are helping to build healthier, safer communities.

Core Initiatives

Advocate for Healthier Policies

L
K
Policy change is essential for creating environments that protect youth and reduce access to harmful substances. CMSAPC works with local governments to implement policies that contribute to healthier communities.

Talk Early. Talk Often.

Our “Talk Early. Talk Often.” campaign empowers parents and caregivers with the tools and confidence to discuss cannabis use with kids and teens. This initiative is at the heart of CMSAPC’s commitment to prevention, providing families with facts and strategies to foster open, honest dialogue.

By starting these conversations early and continuing them often, we can help young people make informed decisions and build healthier futures.

Vaping

High school vaping has declined significantly in MetroWest! Since its peak in 2018, lifetime electronic vapor product (EVP) use among high schoolers has been cut by more than half, with only 18% reporting lifetime use in 2023 and just 10% being current users.

Alcohol

K
Alcohol use continues to drop! Since 2006, current and binge drinking among high schoolers has been reduced by 50%. However, in 2023, 21% of high schoolers reported drinking in the past 30 days, and 12% admitted to recent binge drinking. Educational programs and prevention efforts are more important than ever as older students hold the highest risk, with lifetime alcohol use more than doubling from 9th grade (26%) to 12th grade (55%).

Marijuana

L
K
Marijuana use among MetroWest high schoolers hit record lows in 2023. Only 18% reported using it in their lifetime, and 10% used it in the past 30 days. While vaping remains the most common method of marijuana use (15%), smoking, edibles, and high-potency products are also reported. Mental health concerns remain a key focus, as marijuana use is linked to elevated rates of symptoms like depression and self-injury, especially among current users.

Real Stories, Real Change

Our impact is best seen through the stories of individuals and families in the community.

“I joined a CMSAPC parent workshop and learned how to talk with my son about mental health. Now we’re closer, and he’s thriving in a peer leadership program.”

Maria Lopez

“CMSAPC’s youth coalition helped me gain confidence. I went from quiet meetings to speaking at a town hall. Now I’m planning to study public health in college.”

Jamal Carter

“Volunteering with CMSAPC showed me how small acts—like listening—can change lives. I’ve met amazing people and feel proud contributing to a stronger, healthier community.”
